Sektor Dokumentasi pada tahun dibentuknya, sektor ini bernama Dokumentasi dan Reportase, namun setelah dimulainya Proyek Pemugaran Candi Borobudur secara resmi pada tahun 1973, berubah nama menjadi Sektor Dokumentasi. Sektor ini dibagi kedalam tiga subsektor, yaitu Subsektor Fotografi, Subsektor Data Arkeologi, dan Subsektor Kehumasan (yang juga pernah bernama Penerangan dan Administrasi).
Sektor Dokumentasi mengabadikan keadaan candi, setiap bagiannya, melalui pemotretan dan penggambaran, dan menyusun dokumentasi dari segala sesuatu yang dapat menjadi landasan dan pedoman untuk rekonstruksi selanjutnya.
